Press Quotes

"While Ayler fans no doubt possess this music in some form, the uninitiated would be indeed gratified as well as educated by investigating them. Energetically and dynamically, there is simply nothing like them." - Thom Jurek, All Music Guide

"Concert-culled Ayler is such finite merchandise that nearly all examples are valuable. This set is especially so as the sole opportunity so far to hear a legendary band operating at a communal peak." - Derek Taylor, Dusted Reviews

1. Unity Part I 27.28

To devoted avant jazz fans in the US and Europe during the seventies, Frank Wright was known as the Reverend Frank Wright, a title of veneration universally bestowed upon the saxaphonist by his peers in recognition of his spiritual approach to music, as well as his fervent style of improvisation.

The music here is compelling in its honesty and intensity. Opening with a ringing bell, as if to signal the start of a sacred ritual, Ali and Silva lay down a deep rhythmic groove to begin the piece...The music the band played that June night in Moers is indeed, as the best of jazz always is, a unified expression of each of the players' own distinctive voices. Wright, an egoless leader, allows plenty of space for his sidemen to be themselves. Ali's drumming is particularly noteworthy, not only for its propulsive strength, but also for his intelligent use of repeasted musical motifs.

New CD ESP 4029 Yma Sumac - Recital

With the release of Voice of the Xtabay in 1950, people all over the world were astounded by one of the most unusual voices to emerge on the musical scene: Peruvian singer Yma Sumac, who glides effortlessly from contralto to coloratura, her voice covering a range of no less than four octaves!

The voice of Yma Sumac is indeed a miracle of nature. However, if that were all she was, the public's interest would not have gone beyond mere curiosity. What has made the singer's abilities so striking is the fact that she has managed to use the immense vocal resources at her disposal, resolutely striving for genuine artistry.

In June, 2006, Yma was honored by Peru's highest tribute, the Order del Sol (Order of the Sun) medal. To Recieve the award, and many others including the Key to the City of Lima, she visted Peru, where she created a reawakening of her music in South America. She was recieved warmly by fans of all ages. We hope, in our own small way, to also honor her with this release of a rare moment in musical history!

Press Quotes

"The great sound allows one to hear all the nuances of Sumac's performance from her whispers to growls to flights of high-pitched fancy. Her voice is simply amazing. "Goomba Boomba" and "Amor Indio" are uptempo highlights with swinging orchestral accompaniment. "Cueca Chilena" and "Ccori Canastitay" are female duets with Cholita Rivera accompanied by just Vivanco on guitar. But it's on the moody "Chuncho" that Sumac pulls out all the stops, making unreal sounds and even getting some echo added to her voice to excellent effect. Yma Sumac may still be seen by some as kitsch, but the fact is that she was an amazing vocal talent the likes of which has not been seen since. Listeners who know her real value will be delighted with this excellent live date." - Sean Westergaard

Philadelphia free jazz scene band led by Elliot Levin.

Individually, and in various combinations, they have conspired with many of the more interesting (if not innovative) musical ensembles based out of Philadelphia for the past 30 years or so...Three of the four members of the Quartet are related by blood, while certainly all four members are tied even more so by TIME, SPACE, PSYCHE, and CIRCUMSTANCE... all of which have come together over a number of years to bring about the sounds and words captured here as such form a characteristic show that occurred in Philadelphia..."Upstairs at Nick's". - Liner notes

Press Quotes

"In 2006, the revived ESP label issued this 1998 live set from the quartet New Ghost. The eccentric music is at its most vital when it involves free ensemble-oriented playing as on "It's That Passing Gleam" and "C.T." Some less successful spoken word poetry sections recall Albert Ayler's erratic Impulse albums, but in general the fiery and very open music holds one's interest. Percussionists (one at a time except for two appearing on "C.T.") make guest appearances on three numbers, adding to the fire of this stirring set. Saxophonist Elliott Levin in particular deserves to be much better known." - Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

"Drawing from their extensive experience of playing with virtually every household name in the experimental and avant-garde jazz areas, this quartet featuring Hans Tammen, Alfred 23 Harth, Chris Dahlgren and Jay Rosen delivers a real thrill ride with their new release Expedition. Its members have played with John Zorn, Sonny Sharrock, Jaco Pastorius, Peter Brötzmann, David Murray, Fred Frith, Peter Kowald, Anthony Braxton, Roscoe Mitchell, Keith Rowe, Günter Müller, Paul Lytton, William Parker, Herb Robertson and many others. With masterful command of even the most extreme ranges of their instruments, the four musicians demonstrate perceptive and unflagging attention, bountiful energy, responsive imagination, and the ability to track rapidly shifting shapes of amassed sound and tack personal intent to the group's direction." - Bernard Stollman
